Principal's Message

Dear Community Members,

Assalamu alaikum. I am privileged to get an opportunity to serve my own community in Regina as a principal of the Bangla School of Regina (BS of R). I am proud to be a part of this exciting historical moment of the Bangla School of Regina. Since 2009 Bangla School of Regina has been serving the local Bangladeshi community teaching Bengali to the children of Bangladeshi origin. Bangla School of Regina’s vision and mission is to teach and introduce our mother tongue, meaning Bengali/Bangla language to our children of Bangladeshi families born outside of Bangladesh. We are trying to promote and spread the Bengali language within our community and Bangladeshi community at large. We are inviting every parent of our community, please bring your child and give them support to learn Bengali which is your mother tongue and first language.

It is my pride to share with you this story, the Bangla School of Regina developed it's own teaching curriculum and published three books to teach our students. Presently, the Bangla School of Regina is being used as a model for the language schools. Saskatchewan Organization for Heritage Languages (SOHL) and the Multilingual Association of Regina (MLAR) is using our books and curriculum as a guide for other heritage language schools. I can tell you this; we are the only Bengali language school in the world that has developed its own books and own curriculum. It should be mentioned here; our three books are the only books written for the children of Bengali Diaspora, that are born outside of Bangladesh where the native language is other than Bengali.

It is our mission to develop the children of Bangladeshi community bilingual, i.e., teaching them Bengali/Bangla language with English which they are learning at regular schools. We will work together as a team with the family, school, and community to encourage and motivate all children to reach their fullest potential. It is our goal to use various teaching and learning strategies and materials to teach and engage our children in the classroom. We will accept the challenges to meet the needs of our school community socially, emotionally, academically, and physically. We will work to protect the self-esteem of each individual and to spread Bengali/Bangla language to each family. Our teachers and students will become lifelong learners and responsible citizens striving to reach new heights in order to make Canada a better place to live.

Ultimately, each student will gain from school according to the effort he/she applies. To increase the degree of educational success, it is imperative that teachers, parents, and administrators communicate openly and frequently concerning the progress of students.

I believe, myself and my teachers’ want the best for our children, but we are not enough. You, the parents, must play a key role to teach and practice the language in your surrounding family environment. Your words of encouragement, a hug when the day has been rough, your interest in your children’s language, and your presence at school every Sunday at 1.45pm are vital!

We invite you! Come to the school, meet us, talk to us, join with us and volunteer your time and energy. Your involvement will show your children that you value their education and language.
